During our annual Priest Days convocation this year we
heard talks by two of our brother priests from Africa and
two others from Vietnam. The face of the Church of the
Northwest is changing. An increasing number of many in
our churches were born beyond the borders of the US.
Microsoft has been a major influence in bringing in folks
especially from India, Ireland and the Balkans. With this
diversity comes a richness as the breadth of our Catholi-
cism ‘universalism’ becomes evident in the outlooks, tal-
ents and faith traditions evident in the lives of those from
various parts of the globe. Also, relatively soon after
transitioning from a country of pastors as missionaries
from various lands, especially Ireland, to developing a
more indigenous priesthood, we are becoming increas-
ingly reliant on priests from Africa, the Orient and the
Polynesian Pacific. It is not uncommon to hear North-
west Catholics express difficulty understanding some of
newly arrived priests. Vocations and Catholic practice
are both linked to an economic trend, as wealth an ease
increase the practice of the faith tends to decrease. It is
important for folks of all lands and brands of Catholicism
to recognize our trust and reliance on a good and gracious
God; God’s concrete presence through rich sacramental
encounter, and the hope available though life in Jesus’
Spirit.
Blessings,
Fr. Dave Rogerson

Question of the Week (June 1)
Scriptures: Zechariah 9:9-10; Romans 8:9, 11-13 and
Matthew 11:25-30
Jesus thanked his Father for revealing to “little ones” the
truth of the Gospel, and he told his disciples to learn from
his being meek and humble.
Adults: Who are the “little ones” in today’s world who
seem to “get” the message of Jesus?
Children: Do I come to Jesus when I have problems
so that he cam make my burdens lighter?

Anointing of Sick at All Liturgies
Weekend of July 12-13
In Romans 8:18, Saint Paul says "I consider that the suf-
ferings of this present time are as nothing compared with
the glory to be revealed for us." The Church has always
been concerned about those who are enduring suffering of
any kind, and that is why we anoint the sick in a sacra-
mental sign of our care for those who suffer bodily. Like
other Sacraments, it is intended to be celebrated in com-
munity, with the community showing its prayers and sup-
port for those who are weakened by illness of body, mind,
or spirit.
Here at St. Jude's, set aside two Sundays each year for the
celebration of this sacrament with our entire Sunday as-
sembly. Our next weekend for the anointing the sick is
coming up on July 12-13. All those whose health is seri-
ously impaired by sickness or old age are welcome to step
forward to receive our prayers and be anointed by the
priest. Families and friends of those who are to be
anointed are also invited to come forward with them and
assist by showing the community's support through the
laying on of hands.
If you or someone you know wish to be anointed but need
assistance in getting to one of the liturgies that weekend,
please call the office and we will do what we can to ar-
range transportation.

STEM CELL RESEARCH AND SOCIAL
JUSTICE
Research on human stem cells has for years
been seen as the next great frontier in the
advancement of medical science. It's also
been an area of controversy, as some of the
research has been done on embryonic stem
cells, resulting in the destruction of human
embryos, the most vulnerable of all human
life.
At their meeting earlier this month, the US
bishops for the first time spoke about this
issue. Their relatively brief statement can be
found at www.usccb.org/chronological.shtml.

People of varied backgrounds and Christian tradi-
tions, and people who are active as well as those
who are contemplative, have benefited from the Ex-
ercises. If you think SEEL is right for you at this time
or just want to learn more, review the materials
found at

terials must be submitted no later than August 1,

Knights of Columbus
One of the four guiding principles for the Knights of Co-
lumbus is CHARITY. The St. Jude council is currently
accepting requests for donations. Our calendar runs from
August 2008 to August 2009. Requests must be made in
writing no later than August 1, 2008. Letters are to be
mailed or dropped off at the Parish Office marked for St.
Jude Knights of Columbus. Requests received after this
time will be reviewed by the KC General Council on a
case by case basis.
This past year the Knights donated $30K to various chari-
ties and scholarships. The money was raised by your sup-
port of the pancake breakfasts, annual crab dinner, Okto-
berfest and donors. The St. Jude Knights of Columbus
thank you for your generous support in making these
grants possible.
Prayer Network
As the family of St. Jude, we are called to pray for
one another. Please contact Suzanne Henderson at
425-883-4383 or suzgr8m8@msn.com with requests of
prayers for yourself, loved ones or friends. Our prayer
warriors will remember them in their daily prayers.
Transportation Needed: A parishioner living at
Fairwinds Retirement Center would like to come to
church at St. Jude’s. Her preference is to come to
the 11:00 Sunday morning Liturgy. Another parish-
ioner who lives in the Totem Lake Area of Kirkland
needs a ride to church. He has been coming to St.
Jude’s and would like to continue coming here. If
you can assist in any way will you please contact Sr.
Betty at 425-883-7685 ext. 118.
BREAKFAST BENEFIT / THANK YOU
WOW! Your donations for the returning GI’s pancake
breakfast totaled $1,753.93. Since the Knights of Colum-
bus has donated the food for the event, the entire amount
was forwarded to provide kits for the men and women
who will have none of the bare necessities while waiting
for their belongings to be delivered to them. At least 34
will thus be served. Thank you for your support. Please
read the following letter of thanks.

Dear St. Jude Parishioners,
I am truly overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of the
parishioners of St. Jude in support of the 401
st
Military Police
Company. My husband was assigned to this unit in April
2007 and in May of 2007, the unit deployed to Iraq. This Au-
gust, after having completed their 15 month deployment, these
brave men and women will be returning to Ft. Hood,
Texas. Thanks to your kindness and generosity, the 401
st
MP
CO Family Readiness Group (a volunteer group made up of
the spouses and families of the soldiers of the 401
st
MP CO)
will be able to give these soldiers the wonderful homecoming
they so deserve.
I cannot begin to express how much your support means to
the families of these soldiers. The generosity of your contribu-
tions to this fundraiser is truly amazing, but it is your prayers,
well wishes, and support that have truly touched the spouses
and families of this unit. As a new Army wife, I did not know
what to expect from my husband's first deployment, but I can
honestly say that knowing there are so many people who genu-
inely care about our soldiers has made this experience much
easier. I cannot thank you enough for your thoughtfulness and
for caring enough to make a difference in the lives of these sol-
diers.
On behalf of the soldiers of the 401
st
MP CO, their families,
and the 401
st
MP CO FRG, thank you for your generosity, your
prayers, and your support.
Sincerely,
Jenny Lynch

There are natural ebbs and flows to the Liturgy. We cannot stay at a high for prolonged periods without having moments where we
come to some type of rest. We should build toward the highpoints of the Liturgy and then reverently come down from them with our
hearts still attentive to the entirety of the prayer, for the whole Mass is one prayer made of many.
