Our parish asks everyone to give 2-4 hours of their Time & Talent each week in Prayer & Service, beginning with the participation in weekly Mass and extending to ministry in our parish, our families, and the wider community. 

The following is a list of activities which provide our parishioners an opportunity to serve our community.

 

PARISH COMMUNITY

ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE INTERACTION AND BUILD COMMUNITY

Coffee and Donuts  Hospitality is provided after the Masses on Sunday. Individuals, families, small groups, and parish organizations are encouraged to volunteer for  one Mass on a few Sundays per year. Contact Pat Smith 425-868-6302 or patat98052@yahoo.com

Crab Feed  An all-you-can-eat dinner event including fresh Dungeness crab, salad, rolls and dessert plus a silent auction and raffle.  This years event will be held on February 2, 2008; sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Tickets go on sale in January and sell out early. 

Golden Girls – A support group open to “mature” women of the parish meets for morning mass at 9am on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month to share coffee, conversation, spiritual support for one another.  Just join in or contact Ruth McCabe at 425-702-9016 for more information.

Nativity Display during the Christmas Season This year St. Jude will initiate a tradition of displaying various nativity displays from a multitude of cultures during the Christmas season.  This will be an indoor display reflecting the diversity of cultures within our parish community. Pancake Breakfasts are served by the St. Jude Knights of Columbus on a monthly basis throughout the year.  The all-you-can-eat meal includes juice, scrambled eggs with ham, pancakes and coffee served after Sunday Morning masses. Parish Picnic Help create next year’s parish picnic with our Pastor and Pastoral Council…food, fun and games, and fellowship.  If you’re willing to work as a part of a team to plan, promote, and participate in this July/August event, please contact Don Cairns at 425-895-9530 or doncairns@verizon.net or the parish office at 425-883-7685.

Social Committee  The St. Jude Social Committee promotes gatherings at St. Jude to share fellowship and friendship.  Our goal is to organize events where the whole Parish can come together and have fun in a faith community.  If you have ideas to share and would like to help on the planning side of events at St. Jude, please join us at our next meeting!  Please contact Taya Vercelli at Taya@KV2Audio.com or 425-922-5670 for more information. 

Spring Sing  This annual choir concert, takes place in the church around the end of April each year.  The Sanctuary Choir, together with the Contemporary Choir and Soul Purpose, perform choral selections and solos in a variety of styles for the enjoyment of parishioners and others.  A reception follows in Lovett Hall.  Contact Sue Shellooe at 425-883-7685  to help with refreshments and Hospitality.

WORSHIP AND LITURGY

MINISTRIES THAT SERVE DURING LITURGY

Art and Environment Committee This committee is attentive to the entire liturgical environment for the worship celebrations in the Church. The environment serves the liturgy, and art seeks to foster an awareness of the sacred within the community. One element involves the design and placement of banners and floral art for the various liturgical seasons throughout the year. The committee is open to artists, organizers, and creative thinkers. Eucharistic Ministers  These ministers are entrusted with the service of giving Eucharist to the assembly at liturgy. Contact Cathy Mulligan at 425-881-2948

Lectors  Lectors proclaim the Scripture readings before the Gospel during the Liturgy of the Word at Eucharist. Contact Julianna Castro, 425-883-7597.

Music Ministry  St. Jude's has four music ministries:

The 9:00 Sanctuary Choir serves to support full congregational singing, and also provides specially prepared choral selections appropriate to the season. In the spring, the choir presents an afternoon concert of choral and solo music for the enjoyment of parishioners and others. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings in the church from 7-9 pm. All willing singers in all voice parts –teenagers and adults– are welcome. The ability to read music is not a requirement. Contact Sue Shellooe, 425-788-9194.

The 11:00 Contemporary Gospel Choir encourages spirited participation by the congregation. Musical styles ranging from "gospel" to ethnic, contemporary to jazz, are utilized along with a wide variety of instrumentation to encourage "full, conscious and active participation" among the gathered assembly. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings in the church from 7:00-9:00 pm. Adults and youth are invited, as either singers or instrumentalists. Contact Julianne Mitchell (email) more information.

The 5:30 pm Sunday Night Liturgy is a youth-focused music ministry featuring the Soul Purpose Praise Choir which offers contemporary, youth-friendly music while inviting everyone into full, conscious and active participation through interactive and Spirit-led worship.  Soul Purpose, comprised of a team of youth and adults, is open to all singers and musicians who want to contribute their song-prayer to the life of the SNL Community.  We learn and teach songs “by ear”.  The ability to read music is not required.  Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings at 7 pm in the church.  Contact Jeff Lair, 425-483-0128 or jlair1@aol.com.

Liturgy Cantors, Instrumentalists (Accompanists) ..Opportunities also exist for musicians who are interested in leading the people in singing the songs and sung responses at other weekend liturgies and occasions. Proficient musicians who would like to minister to fellow parishioners in this way can provide the St. Jude’s community with a wonderful source of inspiration. The time commitment is minimal, and usually tailored to what the musician is able to do. Contact Sue Shellooe, 425-788-9194.

Sacristans The ministry of Sacristan involves the set-up and immediate preparations before and after the Eucharistic liturgy. Arrival at least 15-20 minutes before the beginning of the liturgy is needed. Anyone interested serving in this vital and "hidden" liturgical ministry, please contact Carl at 425-883-7685

Ushers/Ministers of Hospitality Ushers help create an atmosphere of welcome during the liturgy. Adults and youth (minimum age 15) are invited to participate in this ministry of hospitality. Contact Aaron Erlandson at 425-883-7685.

 

 

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

OUR COMMUNITY JOYFULLY CELEBRATES THE GRACE OF SACRAMENT

Baptism Preparation Infant baptism preparation classes are held every other month for two consecutive Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 in the Parish Hall. Both parents are encouraged to attend; children and babies are very welcome. Baptisms are held during the regularly scheduled Sunday Masses.  No baptisms are held during the Lenten season. Christian Initiation for Children/Youth (RCIA) This program is for children/youth ages 7-17 who are not baptized Or who are baptized in a faith other than Roman Catholic OR who are baptized Roman Catholic but are 4th grade/or older and have not participated in the sacramental process appropriate to their age group. Elementary Faith Formation  Religious education classes for grades 1-4 are held on Monday, Tuesday afternoons or Tuesday evenings from October to May. Grades 5 and 6 are combined and meet on Monday or Tuesday evenings. The content of the program is based on Scripture, Worship, Doctrine, Morality, Mission/Justice. The essentials of Catholic belief and tradition are presented yearly with a focus on deepening particular aspects of the faith each year according to students' readiness levels. Registration is open year round for children interested in joining the program.  Renewal of registration is in the spring. Confirmation for Adults The purpose of our Adult Confirmation Program is to prepare Catholic adults to make an informed decision to confirm their faith in the Roman Catholic Church. This sacrament is significant in that it completes the sacraments of initiation.  The scheduling of this 6-week program will be determined by the date of the Archbishop’s annual visit for youth confirmation.  Contact: Sr. Betty Schumacher, 425-883-7685 ext. 118.

Confirmation for Youth Preparation for this Sacrament takes place every year for juniors and seniors who have not yet received the Sacrament. There are many ways to support this wonderful, life-giving ministry. Our leadership teams facilitate a small group twice a month consistently from Oct to February. Help is also needed with the reception, as a prayer partner, or sponsoring a youth during the process. It is a great chance to love and support our youth during a very important time in their life. First Reconciliation and First Eucharist Preparation for First Reconciliation, during Lent, and First Eucharist, in the spring, involves second graders (and any 3rd and 4th graders who have not yet had the opportunity to celebrate it), their parents, and the parish community. Sessions assist the parents in helping their children to understand the sacraments and in preparing them to receive the sacraments as part of a faith-filled experience. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Christian Initiation for Adults seeks to welcome, inform and journey with individuals as they deepen their relationship with God and the Church. The beliefs, traditions, practices and rituals of the Catholic faith serve as the cornerstone to feed and nurture this faith journey. This process is for un-baptized adults; baptized Christians from other denominations; and baptized Catholics who would like to prepare for First Eucharist and Confirmation. FAITH FORMATION

Preschool-Kindergarten Faith Formation This early childhood program offers each child an opportunity to grow and develop spiritually, emotionally and socially. Vacation Bible School  VBS is an opportunity for our children to gather with other children, from our parish and local faith communities, for social and educational time while enjoying God in creation and adventure. Contact: Mary Kellison, 425-883-7685, ext. 121

Youth Ministry – EDGE grades 7 and 8  Our junior high ministry takes a comprehensive approach to the total development of our youth. It incorporates socials, service events, monthly gatherings, retreats, sporting events, and summer mission projects. It is the entire church’s responsibility to foster the total development of a young person. We believe in relational ministry. All kids are our kids and need love, nurturing and mentoring to thrive. Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles. You can discover how your gifts and talents can be best utilized. Youth Ministry – VELOCITY grades 9-12  This ministry to older adolescents is a comprehensive approach in ministering to the total person. We nurture the social, spiritual, emotional and psychological dimensions of our youth in a loving and supportive environment. Youth need a variety of different people to mentor and support them as they mature. Anyone can find a way to support youth ministry. To help match people with a particular aspect of the ministry, we have a volunteer interest and involvement form that explains the variety of needs. It ranges from being a small group facilitator two or three times a month to helping out with a retreat or service project or helping with a summer mission outing. SPIRITUALITY

ACTIVITIES TO DEEPEN YOUR FAITH

Eucharistic Adoration  Jesus loves to be with us and asked during his public life “Can you not watch one hour with me?” and “Come to me all you who labor and are weary and I will give you rest.” Adoration is the perfect time and place to rest in God’s love and feel the peace that only God can give. Eucharistic Adoration is held every Friday from 9:30 am until 9:00 pm in the Eucharistic Chapel of the Church. Marriage Encounter  The Marriage Encounter Weekend is designed to give married couples the opportunity to examine their lives together. Emphasis is placed on communication as they take time out of the distractions and tensions of everyday life to concentrate on each other. Men’s Retreat  A three-day Lenten Retreat is offered each spring for men in the parish.  Contact Don Cairns at 425-895-9530 or doncairns@verizon.net for more details. 

Men's Spirituality  The purpose of the group is an opportunity to learn from each other so that we can grow spiritually and become better human beings, husbands, fathers, and men centered in God. Our mission is: "Intimacy with God and men through prayer, worship, and fellowship." There are monthly gatherings, with the exception of summertime, and the highlight of each year is a three-day retreat during Lent. Prayer Network  This is a group of people committed to praying for the special needs of others. Prayer requests are forwarded through the coordinator and passed along confidentially to members of this group. Contact Ann Case, 425-868-0344 or thecaseplace@comcast.net

Rosary Prayer Group  The rosary is a powerful prayer which meditates on Jesus’ life from birth to His Ascension into heaven. Our Blessed Mother tells the visionaries that we should pray the rosary everyday for peace, the end of abortion, for our priests, the Holy Father and for the souls in purgatory. Rosary Prayer is every day after morning mass and Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.

Women’s Spirituality  We are faith filled women seeking a closer relationship with God, through prayer, sharing, and learning.  We cover interesting topics and have guest speakers.  We meet on the 3rd Friday of the month year-round beginning at

LEADERSHIP COUNCILS AND COMMISSIONS

CONSULTATIVE BODIES TO OUR PASTOR FACILITATING COMMUNICATION & DECISIONS

 

Pastoral Council  The Pastoral Council is the coordinating, unifying, and policy-making structure of the parish. It is the vehicle for achieving maximum participation by the whole parish in extending Christ's mission by offering all in the parish a voice in encouraging, guiding and directing the various aspects of parish life. Vacancies occur annually with elections held every spring. Parish members 16 years or older may run for election to a three-year term. The Pastoral Council ordinarily meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Parishioners wishing to present an item for the agenda can do so by contacting Don Cairns at 425-895-9530 or doncairns@verizon.net or the parish office at 425-883-7685.

Finance Council  The Finance Council  advises the Pastor on Parish financial matters. The council develops financial processes, recommends financial goals, strategies, programs and associated budgets.  They conduct long-term planning with regard to funding capital, operational and charitable spending in the Parish.  The Finance Council ordinarily meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Parishioners wishing to present an item for the agenda can do so by contacting Mike Kinzer at 425-883-9794.

Stewardship Council  To foster and facilitate greater participation in being a good steward at St Jude Parish, calling on all parishioners to give of their Time, Talent, and Treasure. Worship Commission the Worship commission is advisory to the pastor on matters related to the parish’s liturgy program.

PASTORAL CARE

PARISH OUTREACH MINISTERING TO OTHERS IN OUR PARISH

 

Funeral Receptions  Volunteer help is needed to serve at funeral receptions. It is a last-minute ministry that is always appreciated by the bereaved family. If you wish to provide some food, we always welcome your offer. Contact Ann Case, 425-868-0344 or thecaseplace@comcast.net

Hospital Ministry  We provide communion to Catholic patients at Evergreen hospital on Fridays and Saturdays and at Group Health Hospital on Thursdays throughout the year. Training is provided and commitment is only once every 5 or 6 weeks. Contact Sr. Betty Schumacher 425-883-7685 ext. 118.

Marriage Advocate  This ministry serves on behalf of the Seattle Metropolitan Tribunal in meeting with and ministering to parishioners in order to assist them in annulment petitioning and submitting necessary forms to the Tribunal to grant them a certificate of nullity of a prior marriage.  Contact Sr. Betty Schumacher 425-883-7685 ext. 118.

Retirement Communities  Father Joey holds Mass at Emerald Heights the fourth Thursday morning of each month at 10:00. Fr. Joey enjoys visiting the elderly in retirement communities in our parish area.  Contact Fr. Joey at 425-883-7685, ext. 113.

Stephen Ministry  Stephen Ministers are trained, caring parishioners who reach out to others who have unique needs. These lay men and women step forward as ministers of Christ's healing love to parish members who are grieving, lonely, ill, suffering from family losses such as death or separation, or other stresses in their lives. Candidates for this ministry spend over 50 hours in training and commit themselves to two years of service in the parish. The same bond of confidentiality that any trained professional observes and honors binds Stephen Ministers. Contact Debbie McCormick at 425-883-7685.

Transportation  Could you offer a ride to Mass now and then for someone who no longer can come on his or her own?  Contact Sr. Betty Schumacher at 425-883-7685, ext. 118.

Visitation to Sick and Homebound  Provide Communion to the sick and homebound of our Parish community. There is a great need for visiting those who are homebound and can no longer attend Mass.  Contact Sr. Betty Schumacher at 425-883-7685, ext. 118 or Fr Joey at  425-883-7685, ext. 113

 

SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH SERVICE

 

The Knights of Columbus  is a Catholic fraternal and service organization. The Knights are involved in the parish through their work with charitable activities relating to church, community, council, family and youth programs. They assist the parish with special projects and sponsor social functions such as parish pancake breakfasts and crab feeds. Contact Don Garcia at 425-868-3002.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society  This organization is made up of men and women of all ages who are directly involved in reaching out to the poor and needy in our parish and in the larger community. Members go out on calls with the main purpose of being the body of Christ to those in need. Assistance is provided in the form of financial help, and/or basic food, shelter, heat and medical need. Saint Bernadette’s Guild  We have served St. Jude for 22 years and welcome all women of the parish to join us. We support various activities in the parish, such as the Confirmation reception; bake sales as needed; hosting coffee & donuts and inviting speakers on various subjects. We also have some fun activities such as a Christmas lunch, trips to Molbaks and Flower World and craft projects. We would love to have your input for this coming year. SOCIAL CONCERNS

ACTIVITIES TO SERVE OTHERS IN OUR COMMUNITY

 

Blood Drives  At least twice a year, the Knights of Columbus sponsor a blood drive at St Jude in conjunction with the Puget Sound Blood Bank.  This is a great opportunity to “give of yourself” in both a spiritual and literal sense.  If you want to reserve a spot, please call Jim Robinson, 425-868-0966 or notnim00@juno.com

 

Food Bank  Support of the Hopelink Food Bank is an ongoing commitment of St Jude's. Parishioners bring non­perishable food items to the church during the week and before mass. Volunteers deliver them to the food bank. Check the Sunday bulletin. Contact Jim Henn at 425-836-3251 or hennka@msn.com.

Giving Tree  This ministry collects contributions for local organizations that provide assistance to those in need. Christmas trees are set up in the back of the church at the beginning of the Advent Season with doves for you to choose. Each dove has information from one of the organizations participating in our project that lets you know the gift request and when it needs to be returned to church.  Habitat for Humanity  Construction is underway at the Patterson Park site in Redmond.  Volunteers are welcome Tues – Sat.  Planning, organizing, and fundraising are in progress for future units. To get involved, contact Tom Granger at 425-869-6007 or tom@habitatekc.org

 Harrington House  Harrington House, a program of Catholic Community Services, is transitional housing for homeless, pregnant and newly parenting women and children offering supportive services and hope to eight women and their babies. A wide range of volunteer opportunities are available: share life-skills, mentor a mother, be an interpreter, provide child care, or gardening. ContactLiz Desault at 425-643-1434 or lizd@ccsww.org

 Matthew House  Founded on the Matthew 25 principle; “When I was hungry you fed me, When I was thirsty you gave me water, when I was a stranger you took me in, when I was naked you clothed me, when I was sick you visited me, when I was in prison you came to me.”  Matthew House provides temporary housing for families visiting prisoners in Monroe, bus service to other Washington prisons, programs for children of prisoners and more. Clothing and food are collected at Saint Jude, picked up the last Sunday of each month and delivered to Monroe. The St Jude Giving Tree provides gifts for 100+ individuals at Christmas time.  Maurice & Dorothy Gilroy 425-881-7904 coordinate this ministry.

 Operation Rice Bowl. Participation in the Lenten Rice Bowl is invaluable to Catholic Relief Services. Your prayers, throughout the year, continue to foster solidarity with our neighbors in need; helping thousands of neighbors all over the world increase their access to food, clean water, and opportunities.  Contact the Parish Office at 425-883-7685.

Prison Ministry  There is a need for committed, faith-filled volunteers to assist detention ministry chaplains in providing a pastoral presence within institutions located in Monroe. Catholic services are held Thursday nights at both the Minimum Security Unit and Twin Rivers, and Friday nights at the Washington State Reformatory. You can contribute to the spiritual enrichment of people we serve through your presence and willingness to listen to their stories while sharing your own faith story. Contact the Parish Office.

Respect Life  Life is a gift from conception to natural death. Several projects are available throughout the year, including; education of available resources; support groups such as Nationwide Prayer Vigil and billboards. Working with neighboring parishes to establish a support system for unwed mothers and adult children and taking care of infirmed parents is a current objective.  Sister Parish  Our sister parish is located in a small town/colony on the outskirts of Tijuana, Mexico and is named Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Teresa of the Child Jesus at Monte Maria. It is run by priests, nuns, and brothers of the religious order Missionaries of Jesus and Mary serving through spiritual sustenance, a food and clothing bank, and countless other signs of hope. Currently there are two trips a year to visit Monte Maria; in the summer for high school students and in December for adults.  Volunteer Chore Services  This program of Catholic Community Services coordinates volunteers to help elders and individuals with a disability remain living independently in their homes. SUPPORT GROUPS

SHARED INTERESTS THAT FOSTER CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY

 

Guardians & Angels  This is a ministry for expectant mothers and mothers of young children (newborn to 5 years).  Our mission is to minister to mothers by fostering new friendships, creating a sense of belonging to the parish community, and supporting each other in raising our children in the Catholic faith.  We meet Thursday mornings 9:30 to 11:30 in the parish hall.  Free childcare is provided in the nursery.  For more information contact Karen Lissy  klissy@earthlink.net.

Inactive Catholics  This ministry is for "returning" Catholics, regardless of what stage of return you are in. This is also an opportunity for practicing Catholics who are willing to listen and help support these people in their journey back. Contact Sr. Betty Schumacher 425-883-7685 ext. 118.

Nursery Coop  This Sunday ministry provides childcare for children, ages 3 years and under, during 9:00 and 11:00 morning Liturgies in the church nursery.  This is a cooperative effort and parents and other volunteers are asked to take turns assisting the weekly nursery care-person.  Registrations are available in the nursery or parish office. Saint Jude Arch Angels  Our group meets the third Monday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00pm in Lovett Hall offering support for people with chronic and life threatening illnesses. The object of our group is to help you through a difficult time as people who have also confronted circumstances similar to these. Whether you are a person with an illness, a caregiver or someone who has lost a loved one or friend from an illness, you are welcome. Sr. Betty Schumacher, 425-883-7685 ext. 118.

Support Group for Bereaved Parents  This support group has been formed for parents who have lost a child through death. The purpose of this group is to provide a spiritual environment where parents can meet in order to ease the burden of loss and have an opportunity to share in a program of grief management. Building & Grounds Maintenance  If you have basic skills in home maintenance and repair you can help with occasional projects such as painting, carpentry, minor repairs, plantings, pruning.   Contact Jerry Kuntz at 425-883-7685, ext 114 or jerryk@stjude-redmond.org

Library Volunteers  Our fabulous library is located in the narthex of the church.  Volunteers are needed to keep this resource organized and clean.  On Sundays after masses, additional volunteers can assist fellow parishioners in finding and checking out resources for prayer, reflection, and better understanding our Catholic faith.  Contact the Parish Office at 425-883-7685 or Julianne Mitchell at jsmitch206@aol.com
