St. Jude Pastoral Council

Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, November 2, 2005

Participants: Nancy Pisconski (Staff), Don Cairns (Chair, Fr. Dave Rogerson (Pastor), Bob Clancy, Lauren Sing, Tim Thompson (Vice Chair), Debbie McCormick, Suzanne Henderson, Gary Smith (parish representative)

 Absent: Anusha Fernando

The meeting began @ 7:02 pm with introductions, individual check –in, and opening prayer. Our guest , Pat Buckley a parish consultant with the Archdiocese was introduced. Pat has worked with several parishes on the process of defining their own Mission Statements & was invited to speak to us on that topic.

Old Business:

¨      Mission Statement: A power point presentation was given by Pat Buckley on the purpose of a Mission Statement; “who you are, what you do, & why. How are you different from the parish down the street?” The role defining, data collecting, goal setting, steps, & commitment from the pastoral council  involved was also presented. A Vision Statement is different from a Mission Statement; it describes what the parish will look like once the Mission is realized. Pat explained this process takes much longer than parishes realize, & we should not plan on being done with the process by June ’06. The first step is to set up a planning team of 5 – 9 people. The team needs to include dreamers, planners, writers, doers, & listeners. Action Plan:

A planning team was established. They will send out notices to committees, & commission groups to notify them about engaging in this process, if interested.

A  food sign up list was passed for the potluck P.C. meeting scheduled for  Wednesday , December 7, 2005.

The minutes from the October meeting were approved.

Pastor’s Report:

¨      Fr. Dave reported the results of the average Mass attendance for October 2005. The 9:00 am & 11:00 am Masses have the most attendance. Data supports removing one of the weekend Masses. Approximately 90 survey & other responses through cards, & e-mails were received, of those about half stated they were “okay” with any necessary changes, other responses included; “ change someone else’s mass, but not mine!”  Following a discussion, a motion was made & seconded to change the Mass times to 5:00 pm on Saturday , 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. & 5:30 pm on Sunday, only between Labor Day & Memorial Day & after Memorial Day, go to a summer schedule of 5:00 pm on Saturday,  &  7:45, 9:00, & 11:00 am on Sunday. The motion was amended to propose that the Pastoral Council only consider a summer schedule as an option if enough interest was shown by parishioners. A vote was taken & the motion & amendment  passed unanimously . A suggestion was made that the 8:00 am music cantors be implemented throughout the year at other mass times, since all the other Sunday services have choirs, & some parishioners prefer a cantor.

¨      Fr. Dave informed us that Fr. Joey remains on antibiotics as he continues to battle the cellulites infection in his legs, & that he is missing the weddings, & commitments, he was involved  with. Fr. Joey really appreciates cards, & visits.

Staff Reports:

¨      Nancy gave a quick overview of the e-mailed reports, & requested the P.C.’s support for the Stephen Ministry’s upcoming workshop on Planning for Future Medical Decisions, being presented by Donna Oiland, of Evergreen Medical Center.

 New Business:

¨      St. Jude’s Social committee is hosting a New Year’s Eve Gathering with child care offered on site. Future events planned include a Crab Feed on February 11, 2006, St. Patrick’s Day celebration, a Parish Potluck in May,  Parish Picnic on July 30, Fall Festival September 30, & Halloween Social.

¨

The meeting was adjourned with a closing prayer at 9:05 pm. The next meeting will be held December 7, 2005 at 6:00 pm in Lovett Hall.

Respectfully submitted, Debbie McCormick
